NASA faces a major budget cut that could reshape its future in space. Will Congress protect the agency, or will SpaceX take over the Moon-to-Mars mission?

NASA, once the undisputed leader in space exploration, is facing its biggest crisis in history. The U.S. government's proposed 2026 budget threatens to reshape the agency’s future by slashing nearly 25% of its funding. This move could put NASA’s current programs and missions at risk, signaling a potential shift in how the United States engages with space.

A devastating budget cut

Under the new proposal, NASA’s budget would shrink to just $18.8 billion, the smallest allocation in decades when adjusted for inflation. This budget reduction would have immediate and severe consequences: massive layoffs, cancelled projects, and a shrinking workforce. The agency, which has long been the face of American space exploration, would be forced to scale back its ambitions.

“The biggest crisis facing NASA in its history,” said The Planetary Society, a U.S. space exploration advocacy group, in response to the budget draft. While the agency’s budget has been reduced before, the proposed cut would be the most significant in a single year, with adjustments for inflation making it the smallest since 1961.

NASA's critical missions at risk

The cuts target NASA's most critical science programs, including missions to Mars and Venus. The proposed budget would eliminate funding for some of the agency’s most ambitious and high-profile missions. This is part of a broader shift towards greater reliance on commercial companies for space exploration, with private companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin taking a more prominent role in programs such as the Moon-to-Mars mission.

Space policy expert Wendy Whitman Cobb points out that this shift could lead to a redefinition of NASA’s mission. “If that role shifts to commercial companies, NASA will need to grapple with what its identity and mission are going forward,” she said.

Leadership crisis

Adding to the challenges, President Trump withdrew his nomination of billionaire Jared Isaacman for NASA Administrator, leaving the agency without a permanent leader. This leadership vacuum comes at a time when NASA needs clear direction to navigate these cuts and redefine its role in an increasingly competitive space sector.

Impact on science and education It’s not just about space exploration. The proposed budget also targets NASA’s climate research, cutting funds for climate monitoring satellites and eliminating green aviation programs. These cuts are part of a broader trend of diminishing support for federal science initiatives. Critics, including former NASA Chief of Staff George Whitesides, argue that the administration’s approach represents a “full-scale assault on science in America.”

The controversial Artemis program, designed to return astronauts to the Moon, is also at risk. The program has already faced significant delays and budget overruns, making it a prime target for further cuts.

What’s next for NASA?

Despite the bleak outlook, the proposed budget is not yet final. It still needs to be debated and approved by Congress, where it could be amended or even scrapped. However, space policy experts are concerned that the cuts, if enacted, would mark a dramatic shift in the U.S.'s approach to space exploration. With increasing reliance on commercial partners and a shrinking NASA, the agency’s role in human space exploration could diminish.

As NASA faces its biggest crisis, the agency’s future remains uncertain, with its role in space exploration at a crossroads.
