Apple has launched a new accessory for your
iPhone that is a little out there. It is quirky, it is zany and one sure to turn heads: Socks for your iPhone. Yup, the American tech giant teamed with Japanese fashion legend Issey Miyake to create an accessory for your phone that doubles up as a quirky-looking sling bag to carry your iPhone around. Apple has named the sock the “iPhone pocket”, and the internet has collectively lost their minds over it, namely because of its price. More on that later. For now, here’s everything about this iPhone pocket that you need to know.
Made in collaboration with Issey Miyake
The iPhone Pocket was designed in collaboration with Issey Miyake. It is created using is a 3D-knitted technique perfected by Miyake, which is based on the philosophy of Japanese craftsmanship of knitting from a single piece of cloth called POC.
Although it is meant to be a protective case, it is a bit different from most regulars cases which are normally carried in pockets or backpacks; this one, can be worn like a sling bag. This can be a more convenient option for sure, but in terms of protection, this may not be as useful as a cover.
A throwback to the iPod Socks
If you're a long-time Apple fan, the iPhone Pocket might feel oddly familiar. Back in 2004, Apple released the now-iconic iPod Socks, colorful knitted sleeves for the iPod lineup. While those were more playful, the iPhone Pocket is positioned as a premium reinterpretation, tying nostalgia to modern fashion trends and Apple’s growing focus on lifestyle accessories.
Pricing: A premium tag for a minimalist accessory
Apple is offering the iPhone Pocket in two designs. The Short strap version retails for $149.95 or about ₹13,000, and is designed more like a compact wrist for carrying it around in your hand. The Long Sling version, which costs $229.95 or about ₹20,400, is meant to be worn like a sling bag. Both versions come in some vibrant colors, including orange, turquoise, yellow, and pink, as well as classic shades like black, blue, and brown.
Why the internet is losing its mind
The reactions online range from awe to full-blown memes. For some, the iPhone Pocket is a bold crossover bewteen fashion and tech . For others, it's Apple selling a “very expensive sock”. The fact that it's meant to be worn, not just slipped into a bag, has sparked a wave of commentary about Apple’s design direction and willingness to go playful again.
Whether one likes it or now,
Apple does know how to make things look cool and uber stylish. It will be interesting to see if this playful accessory was a one off, or of Apple will come up with some more quirky items, and perhaps even quirkier collaborations.
