The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series is one of the most popular folds in the category. Now, Samsung’s next big leap might not be another fold but a full-fledged tri-fold smartphone. The company recently gave the world a sneak peek at its latest concept device, and yes, it looks revolutionary.
Recently, at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in South Korea, Samsung showcased a prototype of its tri-fold. Let’s dive in for more details.
A glimpse at the trifold prototype
People got a glimpse of Samsung’s tri-fold from behind the glass; there was no hands-on access. There is a video making rounds on the internet which was first published by a publication named ‘Chosun Biz’. The video features a trifold prototype in all its glory. There is a display pack with two G-style folds, a device that folds twice into a compact form factor and unfolds into a full tablet-sized display.
What the leaks reveal
Leaked specifications suggest the unfolded display could measure around 10 inches, shrinking to about 6.5 inches when closed.
Leaks from reliable sources suggest that we might see a 10-inch unfolded display and a 6.5-inch one when closed. In hindsight, if you look at it, this trifold will feel like a tab that can fit in your pocket.
The inward-folding design makes structural sense, too. Compared to “outward-fold” concepts, this approach keeps the delicate OLED display tucked away when not in use, extending its lifespan and maintaining a premium look.
Samsung has not announced any launch date yet, but leaks suggest that it might touch the floor next year along with the next lineup of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 series.
The road Ahead
Samsung has always been ahead in its game when it comes to innovation; they were among the first to bring the sliding tech, making fold tech popular, and bringing AI-heavy phones. Hopefully, this trifold tech will surprise tech enthusiasts, too.
While Samsung takes its time refining this next-gen foldable, competition is heating up. Huawei already has its Mate XT Ultimate; the Mate XT proved that triple-fold designs are possible.
Well, there is a competition in the category; Huawei did it way back with its Huawei Mate XT Ultimate, a tri-fold smartphone that debuted in China earlier this year. Though it’s not available in India. But Samsung’s version looks more refined and production-ready. Let’s wait for the exciting tech and then decide.
