Chacha Chaudhary and his vegetarian furry friend

Chacha Chaudhary and his vegetarian furry friend
Chacha Chaudhary comic books were a staple that all the 90s kids in India were brought up on. A big part of these endearing stories was Chacha's dog, Rocket. However, Rocket was not your regular dog!

The celebrity of Chacha Chaudhary

Chacha Chaudhary, one of India’s most loved fictional characters, was introduced to the world in 1971 through the Hindi magazine ‘Lotpot’ and became an instant hit.

He is a quick-witted old man with a striking red turban and a signature moustache adorning his face.

Chacha’s specialty lies in his ability to solve problems, no matter how convoluted, because of his worldliness and of course his celebrated mind.

His talents are captured by a recurring phrase throughout the many versions of the comic: “Chacha Chaudhary ka dimaag computer se bhi tez chalta hai!”.

Chacha's canine best friend, Rocket

On all his adventures Chacha has a constant companion - his dog, Rocket. Rocket is an astute little furry fellow who helps Chacha solve his problems through keen observation. Rocket, true to his nature, loves Chacha unconditionally.

Rocket was found as a stray by Chacha Chaudhary and eventually adopted by him. This is to the constant annoyance of Bini Chachi, his wife, who is exhausted by taking care of their extraterrestrial house guest, Sabu.

However, Bini Chachi couldn’t stay immune to the sweet charms of Rocket, especially not after he proves his loyalty by taking on the thieves who had come to rob their house.

'The only vegetarian dog in the world!'

Interestingly, Pran Kumar Sharma, the creator of the series wrote Rocket as a vegetarian! His defining line in the comics is ‘Chacha Chaudhary ka kutta ssurrlup ssurrlup doodh peeta hai.’

One of the probable reasons for Rocket’s vegetarianism could be the demographic Sharma was trying to address using ‘Chacha Chaudhary’. Catering to the average middle-class families where pets eat what the family eats, making the Chaudhary family even more relatable to the target audience.

Chacha Chaudhary’s canine companion Rocket is the only vegetarian dog in the global comic book universe and seems to own that label without much fuss.
