The campaign for the Bihar Assembly elections turned violent, after clashes broke out between the ruling Janata Dal (United) and the new entrant Jan Suraaj.
The incident occurred in Tartar village in the Mokama Assembly constituency, where Jan Suraaj candidate Priyadarshi Piyush and JD(U) candidate Anant Singh were holding rallies.
Gun violence
A fight broke out between workers of both parties, killing one person and injuring several others.
Police rushed to the scene and found Jan Suraaj worker Dular Chand Yadav dead in one of the many vandalised vehicles. Though the police are yet to confirm the cause of death, reports suggest the 70-year-old might have suffered a gunshot wound.
Patna SSP Kartikeya K Sharma said, Dular Chand Yadav died while he was campaigning for Jan Suraaj Party's candidate Piyush Priyadarshi, another officer said."Whether he succumbed to bullet injuries or it was an accidental death can only be known when the police get the body."
Police said the matter is being investigated and a huge number of security have been deployed in the area.
Jan Suraaj state president Manoj Bharti called the killing an assault on their party’s democratic rights.
RJD hits at Modi
Rashtraya Janata Dal's Tejashwi Yadav too questioned the law and order situation in the state.
Remember, the ruling JD(U)-BJP alliance has made law and order in Bihar a key poll plank. In an election rally this week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the opposition RJD of pushing the state into 'jungle raj'.
The Mokama incident has given the RJD an opportunity to reverse the narrative.
Tejashwi Yadav said, "How are people roaming free with guns during the campaign when the model code of conduct has already been imposed? The murder of Dular Chand Yadav is a matter of serious concern."
