BANGLADESH FIGHTER JET CRASH TOLL HITS 25

The death toll from the Bangladesh fighter jet crash has reached 25. On Monday, a Bangladesh Air Force jet crashed into a school building in the capital, Dhaka. The pilot and 24 others, mostly students, have been killed. At least 171 people are injured. About two dozen are in critical condition. The jet was a Chinese-made F-7 BGI training aircraft. It reportedly experienced a “technical malfunction” shortly after take-off. An F-7 training aircraft had crashed near Dhaka back in 2008 as well.

RUSSIA-UKRAINE TO HOLD PEACE TALKS IN ISTANBUL

Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, says that a new round of peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow is scheduled for Wednesday. The talks are supposed to take place in Turkey’s Istanbul. These will be the first talks in seven weeks. The last two rounds of negotiations led to the exchange of thousands of prisoners of war, but not to a ceasefire. But Russian President Vladimir Putin is under increasing pressure from his American counterpart, Donald Trump, to end the war. Last week, Trump threatened Putin with more sanctions if the Russian president did not reach a ceasefire deal in 50 days. However, Russia says that Moscow and Kyiv are “diametrically opposed” over how the war should end.

IRAN SAYS IT WON’T STOP URANIUM ENRICHMENT

There are also another set of talks taking place in Istanbul this week. Iran will discuss its nuclear programme with Britain, France and Germany. The three European nations have threatened to reimpose, or “snapback”, sanctions on Iran, if it doesn’t resume negotiations on a new nuclear deal with the US. Iran-US nuclear talks were derailed after the Americans bombed Iranian nuclear facilities on June 22. Tehran says it is open to “indirect” talks with the US, but it will not stop enriching Uranium. Uranium enrichment was a major sticking point during the last five rounds of talks between the US and Iran. Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, says that his country will keep enriching Uranium, calling it a matter of “national pride”.
