The future of Indian cricket legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the ODI format has come under the spotlight after fresh reports suggested that the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) may set a new condition that could see both stalwarts bidding farewell to the 50-over game much earlier than expected.
India were originally scheduled to play a three-match ODI series against Bangladesh this month, but the tour was scrapped due to political tensions between the two nations. This cancellation means the Indian cricket team will now play only 24 more ODIs in the lead-up to the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup. The big question: will Kohli and Rohit be a part of those remaining matches?
According to a report, the upcoming ODI series in Australia this October might not be just another overseas assignment — it could potentially serve as a farewell tour for two of India’s greatest-ever batters.
The key reason lies in BCCI’s selection policy. In order to be considered for the 2027 ODI World Cup squad, players will need to maintain their “one-day cricket rhythm” by actively participating in domestic 50-over tournaments, specifically the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The idea is to ensure that all prospective World Cup players stay match-fit and in sync with the format — much like how red-ball hopefuls are asked to feature in the Ranji Trophy before major Test series.
However, this requirement could prove to be the turning point for Kohli and Rohit. Both players, now in their mid-to-late thirties, have already retired from T20 internationals and Tests, focusing selectively on formats to manage workload. Committing to a full domestic one-day season may not align with their long-term plans, and that could open the door for an ODI retirement.
If these reports turn out to be true, the three-match series in Australia — scheduled for October 19, 23, and 25 in Perth, Adelaide, and Sydney — may carry more emotional weight than expected. For fans, it could mark the last time they witness Kohli and Rohit together in the blue jersey in the ODI format.
As the cricketing world waits for official confirmation, one thing is clear — the next few months could shape the final chapter of two legendary ODI careers.
