At the recently concluded Lakmé Fashion Week 2025, designer Namrata Joshipura showcased a collection that was all about athleisure. For those who thought athleisure is out of the fashion game, think again! Namrata's collection combined comfort with flair. Think power prints, unexpected textures, a splash of sequins, and a whole lot of personality.

The journey of athleisure

Athleisure— a combination of athletics and leisure—was once the uniform of a global shift. Back in the late 2010s, it surged to peak popularity, riding on the wave of wellness culture, busy lifestyles, and the rise of “Instagrammable” everyday wear. Gym leggings, sports bras doubling as crop tops—athleisure wasn’t just a trend, it was a movement.

A trend that saw a boom in technical textiles, including innovations in breathable fabrics and moisture-wicking materials, this trend was also responsible for the global sneaker obsession that led to the hype-based valuation of coveted kicks.

While many thought that the craze for athleisure wear was over during the pandemic, Namrata’s latest connection is proof that the trend is back. When the world finally reopened in 2023 post the lockdown, people were quick to predict a return to glamour. But it seems that phase is done with now, and we have embraced comfort yet again. Clearly, athleisure wasn’t a fleeting phase- it is here to stay!

Namrata Joshipura at LFW

Namrata Joshipura, a former athlete herself, is known for keeping utility and comfort in mind while keeping the overall aesthetic of her garments elegant. But this year, she didn’t just revisit athleisure—she redefined it. Her Lakmé Fashion Week 2025 collection was a vibrant celebration of individuality. She breathed new life into the often-monotonous world of sportswear, adding vibrant prints, playful colours, and a subtle touch of sequins for that extra edge.

Malaika Arora and Kubbra Sait rocked Namrata’s creations on the runway. Malaika wore a sparkly black jumpsuit featuring a bodycon tank top, leggings, and cropped bomber jacket.

Kubbra wowed in a red geometric co-ord set featuring leggings, layered shorts, and a cropped tee, all topped with a matching full-sleeve jacket. She completed the sporty-chic vibe with a sleek pair of sneakers.

Now, it’s only a matter of time before we start seeing other celebrities embrace this trend again, be it at the airport, or on a night out!
