Punjab Kings (PBKS) made a calculated move at the IPL auction by spending ₹3 crore on 22-year-old Australian all-rounder Cooper Connolly. While Connolly does not yet have an extensive international résumé, PBKS clearly believe they have secured a high-upside player who fits both their immediate needs and long-term plans.
Cooper Connolly’s Big Bash League Numbers Tell the Story
Connolly has been one of the most under-the-radar performers in the Big Bash League (BBL) for the Perth Scorchers. Batting primarily at No. 3, he has scored 636 runs in 23 innings, averaging 40+ with a strike rate close to 140, numbers that reflect consistency and controlled aggression.
With the ball, Connolly has quietly added value as well. In 17 BBL innings, he has taken 12 wickets while maintaining an economy rate just over 7, making him a genuine utility option rather than a part-time bowler.
A Player Who Offers Flexibility and Balance
What sets Connolly apart is his multi-skill impact. He can anchor an innings, accelerate when required, and contribute overs in the middle phase. In a league where balance is crucial, PBKS clearly see him as a player who can fill multiple roles depending on match situations.
His recent knock of 59 off 31 balls against Sydney Sixers, which included five sixes, underlined his ability to switch gears. That adaptability makes him a valuable asset in T20 cricket. Proven Composure at International Level
Though still early in his international journey, Connolly has already shown he can handle pressure. During Australia’s ODI series against India, he played a key role in the second ODI, scoring 61* off 53 balls in a challenging run chase. That innings showcased maturity beyond his age.
Why PBKS See Connolly as a Long-Term No. 3 Option
PBKS head coach Ricky Ponting is believed to be a strong admirer of Connolly’s game. With Josh Inglis’ availability not always guaranteed, Punjab Kings opted for a stable, long-term solution at No. 3 rather than a short-term fix.
PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer has even described Connolly as a “perfect fit” for the team’s setup. At ₹3 crore, Cooper Connolly represents a low-hype, high-impact investment: a young all-rounder whose best cricket may still be ahead of him.
