Celina Jaitely has recently made some headline-making claims and statements. The former Bollywood actress has revealed that her husband did not let her continue in movies after their wedding. While Jaitely has filed for divorce, she has made some explosive claims.
In a recent interview with Mid-Day, the lawyer, Niharika Karanjawala, claimed that Celina was forced not to continue her career in the film industry. “He prevented her from working," Karanjawala said, adding that the actress is also seeking compensation for “unrealised potential profits" from the flourishing career she was forced to abandon.
The lawyer also revealed that Jaitly has sought compensation of Rs 50 crore from her estranged husband and Rs 10 lakh per month as maintenance.
However, Celina is not the only woman to have quit acting after her wedding.
Asin, one of the most successful actors of the 2000s with films like ‘Ghajini’ and ‘Ready,’ walked away from a thriving career immediately after her 2015 wedding. She had delivered multiple hits and was at the top of her game, but chose to step back completely from the spotlight.
Jaya Bachchan had done something similar. After delivering critically acclaimed films throughout the ’70s, she stepped away from acting post-Silsila in 1981 to focus on her family.
In an interview, Bachchan revealed, “I don’t think sacrifice is the right word that I would use. I would say that you are putting somebody else’s requirements, emotions and thoughts before yours. It is not a sacrifice, I think when you do something from within you, it is not a sacrifice. You know you are an educated girl, you are a smart girl, why should you be saying sacrifice.”
Speaking about her own experience as a mother, Jaya said, “I remember when I stopped working and everybody said, ‘Oh she’s sacrificed her career for her marriage and children’, it was not so. I was really very happy being a mother and a wife. I enjoyed that role more than what I was getting to do (in films), which is a repeat of the same thing. It was not a sacrifice at all.”
Neetu Kapoor’s story is another widely known example. She retired from films at just 21 after marrying Rishi Kapoor. In many interviews, she had revealed that Rishi was super possessive and wanted her around all the time.
Then there’s Bhagyashree, who became a national sensation with ‘Maine Pyar Kiya.’ At a time when she could have gone on to dominate Bollywood, she chose to quit acting immediately after, prioritising her marriage and family life.
