Ever wished you could understand what your cat’s meows or your dog’s barks actually mean? Well, Baidu might just be working on the tech to make that happen. The Chinese tech giant has filed a patent for an AI-based animal sound translator that could potentially decode pet vocalisations into human language. The goal? Better emotional connection between you and your furry (or feathery) best friend.

AI-powered meow translator? Baidu says yes

According to the patent filed with China’s National Intellectual Property Administration, Baidu’s system would use artificial intelligence to analyse, interpret, and translate animal vocalisations in real time. The company says it hopes this tool will enhance “emotional communication and understanding” between animals and humans. The tech is still in early research stages, but it’s clear Baidu wants to go beyond basic voice assistants—it wants to crack interspecies conversations wide open.

The race to decode animals is heating up

Baidu isn’t the only one chasing this dream. California’s Earth Species Project has been training AI to understand birdsong, dolphin whistles, and even elephant rumbles. Another nonprofit, NatureLM, recently bagged $17 million in funding to build language models for animal communication. SETI scientists even claimed they “chatted” with a humpback whale last year. Translation? Everyone’s trying to talk to animals—and AI might be the key to doing it.

So, when can you talk to your cat?

While the idea of whispering sweet nothings to your cat and having it reply is fun, don’t expect it to land in the App Store just yet. Baidu’s project is still in development, and decoding animal language is notoriously hard. But with breakthroughs in AI happening almost daily, the idea of a pet translator no longer feels like a distant fantasy. In a few years, “meow” might actually mean something—and we’ll finally know if our cats love us or just tolerate us for snacks.
