Think Tirupati is only about temple visits? Think again! This iconic temple town in Andhra Pradesh is preparing for a stellar transformation and becoming India’s first-ever Space City.
Who’s leading the charge?
The ambitious project is spearheaded by Skyroot Aerospace, an 8-year-old startup founded by ex-ISRO scientists. Often called India’s answer to SpaceX, Skyroot is investing ₹400 crore to build the space city across 300 acres near Tirupati.
What will the Space City look like?
The sprawling space city will house:
- Satellite production units
- Launch pads for private satellite missions
- Technology parks focused on space innovation
- Two major defense manufacturing hubs located at Madakasira
This strategic location is just a short drive from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, India’s primary spaceport, making it an ideal launchpad for private commercial spaceflight.
Bigger vision: A hub for aerospace and defense
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu envisions even greater aspirations. The state aims to attract up to ₹1 lakh crore in investments over the next five years to transform itself into a premier aerospace and defense manufacturing powerhouse. The two defense hubs in Madakasira will focus on manufacturing aerospace components, defense electronics, and weapon systems. This will create thousands of jobs and foster a robust ecosystem of startups, research institutions, and manufacturing clusters.
Strategic advantages and impact
Andhra Pradesh already hosts ISRO’s Propulsion Complex near Tirupati, providing valuable infrastructure and talent. The space city aims to boost India’s role in the global commercial space economy by enabling cost-effective satellite launches and innovation. This also aligns with India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, reducing dependence on foreign technology and boosting exports.
With Skyroot Aerospace’s ₹400 crore investment and the state government’s grand vision, the sky truly is no longer the limit.
