Amid rising concerns among fans that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma might be snubbed from the 2027 ODI World Cup squad, Shubman Gill opened up on their participation. Ahead of the 2nd Test vs the West Indies in Delhi, the Indian skipper said that the legendary duo is very much in contention for the World Cup.
Gill on Virat and Rohit
"Jo experience hain unke paas aur jitne unhone matches jitvaye hain India ko, bohoot hi kum players hain jinhone itne matches India ko jitvaye hain... Aur jin players ke paas aisi skill aur aisi quality hoti hain aur is experience ke sath aisi skill aur quality vale world mein bohoot kum players hain. To us lihaz se bilkul hum dekh rahe hain."
(“The experience they have and the number of matches they have won for India, there are very few players who have done that. There are very few players in the world with such skill, quality and experience. From that perspective, we are definitely looking at them for 2027.”)
Gill recently replaced Rohit as India's new ODI captain and his first assignment will be the Australia series. This came after he was made India's Test skipper after Rohit stepped down.
The ODI series Down Under will mark the return of Virat and Rohit in international cricket. The duo last donned the India Blue in the Champions Trophy earlier this year, a tournament India won undefeated. Both of them have already retired from Tests and T20Is and one-day cricket is the only format where fans can see them play for India.

Gill also opened up on the traits that he has picked up from Rohit after replacing him as India’s Test captain. “There are so many qualities that I have inherited from Rohit bhai, and still want to,” Gill said.
“The calmness that he poses and shows to us, and the kind of friendships that he has built with the players in the group, is something that I aspire to. These are the qualities that I want to take from him,' he concluded.
The 2027 ODI World Cup is still 2 years away and Rohit will be almost 41 at the time. But the way he has been scoring runs and his weight transformation have been clear signs that he can't be kept out of the ODI set-up, unless he hits a very bad slump.
Virat on the other hand has a realistic chance of playing the World Cup, given he is younger to Rohit and is still in the best shape of his life.
