Grand Ceremonial Welcome for PM Modi in Mauritius

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Mauritius on Tuesday to a grand and heartfelt welcome, marking the beginning of his two-day state visit as the chief guest for the island nation’s National Day celebrations. Despite the early morning hour, PM Modi was greeted at the airport by Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, who personally presented him with a traditional garland, symbolizing the deep ties between the two nations.
The welcome ceremony was attended by over 200 dignitaries, reflecting the significance of Modi’s visit. Among those present were Mauritius’ Deputy Prime Minister, Chief Justice, Speaker of the National Assembly, Leader of the Opposition, Foreign Minister, Cabinet Secretary, and Chairperson of the Grand Port District Council. MPs, MLAs, members of the Diplomatic Corps, and religious leaders also joined to extend their greetings, showcasing the widespread respect for the Indian leader and the strong bilateral relationship.
PM Modi expressed gratitude for the warm reception, posting on X, “Landed in Mauritius. I am grateful to my friend, PM Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, for the special gesture of welcoming me at the airport. This visit is a wonderful opportunity to engage with a valued friend and explore new avenues for collaboration in various sectors.” The visit, at Ramgoolam’s invitation, aims to deepen the historical, cultural, and economic ties between India and Mauritius, which share a maritime partnership and a significant Indian-origin population of nearly 70% of Mauritius’ 1.2 million people.
During his stay, PM Modi will attend National Day celebrations on March 12, meet with Mauritius’ president and senior leaders, and inaugurate projects like a civil service college and health center, built with Indian assistance. This visit underscores India’s commitment to strengthening its strategic partnership with Mauritius, a key ally in the Indian Ocean region and gateway to Africa.
