Amrut Distilleries, a Bengaluru-based pioneer in Indian single malt whisky, launched Expedition, a groundbreaking 15-year-aged expression priced at ₹10.5 lakh (approximately $12,000).
This limited-edition release, marking the company’s 75th anniversary, is heralded as India’s oldest and rarest single malt whisky, captivating enthusiasts and collectors worldwide. With only 75 bottles produced, Expedition represents a milestone in Indian whisky craftsmanship, blending heritage with innovation.
According to reports, Expedition underwent an extraordinary maturation process: eight years in a sherry cask sourced from Europe, followed by seven years in an ex-bourbon cask from the United States. This dual-cask aging imparts rich, complex flavors, setting it apart in the premium spirits market.
Each bottle features advanced authentication, including an NFC tag and a custom card detailing its origin, emphasising Amrut’s commitment to quality and exclusivity. Rakshit N. Jagdale, Managing Director of Amrut Distilleries, described it as “history in a bottle,” paying tribute to his late father, Neelkanth Rao Jagdale, whose vision elevated Indian whisky globally.
The launch, celebrated at a grand event at ITC Gardenia in Bengaluru, underscores Amrut’s leadership in the Indian single malt category. As reported by The Hindu BusinessLine, only nine bottles are available in India, with the rest distributed across key markets like the USA, UK, Europe, Dubai, Singapore, and Australia. This scarcity has sparked interest among connoisseurs, positioning Expedition as a collector’s gem.
Amrut, founded in 1948 by JN Radhakrishna Rao Jagdale, pioneered India’s single malt industry with its 2004 release. Today, it competes with global giants, driven by India’s growing wealth and demand for premium spirits. Jagdale told The Economic Times that Expedition reflects “relentless pursuit of excellence,” a testament to Bengaluru’s tropical climate enhancing whisky maturation.
For whisky lovers and investors, Expedition offers unmatched rarity and prestige. Its ₹10 lakh price tag places it among the world’s costliest whiskies, spotlighting India’s rising stature in the luxury spirits arena. As Amrut continues to innovate, this launch cements its legacy, making Expedition a must-have for those seeking the finest Indian single malt whisky.
