Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a heartfelt and cultural welcome upon arriving in Mauritius on Tuesday, as members of the Indian diaspora greeted him with the traditional Bihari Geet Gawai, a Bhojpuri musical ensemble reflecting the rich heritage of India’s Bhojpuri region. PM Modi was seen enjoying the songs, clapping in rhythm, and engaging warmly with the performers, showcasing the deep cultural ties between India and Mauritius.
Geet Gawai, brought to Mauritius by indentured laborers from India’s Bhojpuri belt in the 19th and early 20th centuries, holds immense cultural significance. Recognized by UNESCO in 2016 as part of the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, it symbolizes the enduring legacy of Indian traditions in the island nation. As PM Modi arrived at his hotel in Port Louis, the Indian diaspora chanted “Bharat Mata ki Jai,” waving mini Indian tricolors, expressing their pride and joy.
Members of the diaspora shared their excitement. Divya said, “I met PM Modi and got the opportunity to shake hands with him. I am very happy to participate in such an event.” Saraswati added, “It feels really great meeting our Prime Minister. The relations between India and Mauritius are strong, and we hope they continue to grow.” Preeti echoed, “I met PM Modi, shook hands with him, and spoke to him—it’s a great honor.”
The warm reception, highlighted by Official Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal’s post on X—“Namaste Mauritius! PM Narendra Modi arrives in Mauritius to a warm and enthusiastic welcome! In a special gesture, warmly received by PM Dr Navin Ramgoolam at the airport”—underscored the strong bilateral bonds. PM Modi’s two-day visit, as chief guest for Mauritius’ National Day, aims to deepen strategic ties, celebrate shared heritage, and engage with the Indian-origin population, which constitutes nearly 70% of Mauritius’ 1.2 million people.
