Your phone’s got more tech than NASA’s 1969 moon mission! But here’s the real shocker: 90% of its brain- that’s semiconductors-are imported, and most of those come from China. But that’s about to change. India’s making big moves to flip the script.
Now, you might be wondering, “Why should I care?” Hold that thought-we’ll get there. First, let’s break down what all this really means. So, what exactly is a semiconductor? These tiny silicon wafers control EVERYTHING.
Your Insta scroll, your video calls, even electric cars. Think of them as tech’s heartbeat.
But here’s the catch: India buys most of its chips from China. In financial year 2023-24, India’s semiconductor imports surged to 20.5 billion dollars. And China remained the largest supplier.
Now, that’s a big deal for our digital future! So, what is India doing about cutting this over-reliance on imports, specifically from China?
Well, the Government has said that the first Made in India chip will be ready for rollout in 2025.
Five semiconductor plants are already at different stages of construction. Three of these are in Gujarat, one in Assam and the third one is in Rajasthan.
Now the Union Cabinet has approved India’s sixth chip plant in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh. India’s HCL and Taiwan’s Foxconn are dropping 3,706 crore rupees to build it. By 2027, it’ll pump out 36 million display chips per month.
Now, these Made in India chips will make your screens vibrant!
But is there more in it for you? Basically, why should you care? There are a few answers to that. The impact on jobs. These plants are already creating thousands of direct jobs. Say engineers, AI trainers, robot operators and more.
The second is - cheaper tech: Local chips will mean fewer imports. That could translate to cheaper phones and laptops among other electronics. And the third one – the global flex. India aims for 500-billion-dollar electronics industry by 2030. We achieve that and we’ll be the new tech hotspot!
So, the next time you game or stream, remember-your gadget might soon have an Indian brain. Share this if you’re hyped for India’s tech revolution!
