The BJP has demanded the resignation of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar. The party has held the Congress government in the state responsible for the Bengaluru stampede. Eleven people died and 33 were injured on Wednesday in the stampede as RCB fans gathered to catch a glimpse of the team after their first-ever IPL win.

Active COVID cases near 5,000

The number of active COVID cases is inching closer to the 5,000 mark. As of 8 AM Thursday morning, the figure stood at 4,866. Kerala, Karnataka, West Bengal and Delhi each reported triple-digit additions to their active case tally, leading to a rise of more than 500 cases. Seven people died due to COVID during this period.

The right to form a family

The Madras High Court has ruled that although same-sex marriage is not legal in India, LGBTQIA+ individuals can still form a family. The High Court made this observation while granting relief to a 25-year-old petitioner. The court allowed the woman, who was detained by her family against her will, to go with her female partner, noting she was entitled to do so of her own free will.

The trade tussle impact

Gita Gopinath, First Deputy Managing Director of the IMF, has warned that US President Donald Trump’s trade war presents an even tougher challenge for emerging market policymakers than the COVID-19 crisis. Speaking to the Financial Times, Gopinath said the unpredictable impact of tariffs on developing economies and global markets would make it particularly difficult for central bankers to support their economies.

Dalal Street trades higher

Indian equities continued their upward journey for the second straight session. The Sensex scaled the 81,500 mark during the session, while the Nifty also inched closer to 25,000 once again. The market ended the day higher despite several negative cues from around the world.

Actor Aamir Khan has announced a tie-up with Director Lokesh Kanagaraj for a superhero flick. During an interaction with journalists, Khan said the superhero film will go on floors in the second half of 2026.
