An earthquake, a prison break, and clueless officials - that’s the latest coming in from neighbouring Pakistan.
In the early hours of Tuesday, over 200 prisoners from the Malir Jail in Karachi escaped after chaos erupted during a precautionary evacuation due to an earthquake. Thousands of inmates broke down cell doors and shattered windows fearing the building would collapse on top of them.
The police fired warning shots following which most of the over 5,000 inmates returned to their cells. But some chose to take advantage of the ensuing chaos to escape the prison altogether. As the frenzy turned violent, police said one prisoner was killed and two prison officers injured.
Police said 80 inmates had been recaptured and a search was underway for those still at large.
The prison's superintendent decried that the incident is "not a security lapse” but the province’s minister for prisons, Ali Hassan Zardari, was unfazed and ordered an investigation, warning any officers at fault will be disciplined.
