When the spotlight shines brightest, some players rise to the occasion. For India in T20 cricket, that man is Arshdeep Singh. The left-arm pacer may not always hog headlines, but time and again he has proved why he is one of India’s most reliable bowlers in crunch moments.

Super Over Heroics Against Sri Lanka

The latest reminder came in the nail-biting clash against Sri Lanka. With the game heading into a Super Over, India needed nerves of steel. Who did Suryakumar Yadav turn to? Arshdeep Singh. The 25-year-old delivered just two runs, took two wickets, and sealed victory. Even after a momentary caught-behind/run-out confusion, Arshdeep regrouped instantly and struck on the very next ball. That’s the definition of clutch.
It wasn’t just the Super Over. Earlier, he bowled the 17th and 19th overs, traditionally the toughest phases for bowlers. He conceded just 20 runs across them, most of which came on the last ball of each over. His execution, bouncers, wide yorkers, slower deliveries, it was near perfect.

Why Pakistan Should Be Worried

Now, as India gear up for the Asia Cup final against Pakistan, the big question is: should Arshdeep keep his place in the XI? The numbers make a compelling case. Against Pakistan, Arshdeep has taken 7 wickets in 4 matches at an economy of under 8. More importantly, he has never gone wicketless against the Men in Green.
His record in ICC tournaments is also noteworthy. Who can forget the 2022 T20 World Cup, where he dismissed both Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan in a fiery opening spell? While Virat Kohli’s heroics stole the show that night, Arshdeep’s breakthroughs laid the foundation.

The Selection Dilemma

Team India face a tricky balance. With Hardik Pandya’s fitness a concern, management might have to play Arshdeep. But even if Pandya is fit, leaving out Arshdeep could be a gamble. His ability to strike both with the new ball and in the death overs is rare, and in high-pressure games against Pakistan, that skill set is invaluable.

The X-Factor India Needs

Arshdeep Singh is not just India’s highest wicket-taker in T20Is; he’s also their go-to man under pressure. In a final where one over can decide everything, India may find their best bet is not just Bumrah’s brilliance, but Arshdeep’s cold-blooded calm.
