Abdel Fateh Mahdi, brother of Talal Abdo Mahdi, who was allegedly killed by Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya, has said there can be no pardon for her. Speaking to BBC Arabic, he said Priya’s actions were inexcusable, regardless of any personal dispute.

He also criticised Indian media for distorting facts. His comments come even as Nimisha’s scheduled execution in Yemen remains on hold, with efforts ongoing at various levels to save her life.

Protests in Odisha

Protests have erupted across Odisha after a 20-year-old B.Ed. student died on Monday, days after setting herself on fire. She had accused Samira Kumar Sahu, Head of the Education Department, of sexual harassment. She has later also alleged inaction on her complaint against Sahu.

After her death, opposition parties including the BJD and Congress are staging state-wide protests. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also spoke with the student’s family, later calling the incident “inhuman, shameful, and a wound to society.” The University Grants Commission has now set up a panel to investigate the case.

Demand for J&K statehood

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and MP Rahul Gandhi have written to Prime Minister Modi demanding the immediate restoration of Jammu & Kashmir’s statehood. They’ve urged the government to introduce legislation in the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament, calling statehood a legitimate, constitutional right of the people of J&K.

NATO warning to India, China

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has warned countries like India, China, and Brazil of potential secondary sanctions if they continue trading with Russia. His remarks follow US President Donald Trump’s announcement of 100% secondary tariffs on buyers of Russian exports unless a peace deal is reached within 50 days. Rutte said these countries should take the warning seriously, as the economic impact could be severe.

Second straight session in the green

Indian equities ended in the green for the second consecutive session, though with marginal gains. The Sensex was up a tenth of a per cent. The Nifty also saw a similar uptick, closing around 25,200.
