“Operation Sindoor is the ‘new normal’”: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his first address to the nation since May 7th’s ‘Operation Sindoor’ has said that it has set a “new normal” in India’s fight against terrorism. PM Modi added that “Operation Sindoor has only been suspended and every step taken by Pakistan will be watched and that India will strongly respond to any fresh attack without succumbing to nuclear blackmail.

Furthermore, going forward, talks with Pakistan will only be on the subject of terrorism and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, PM Modi declared.

UN calls for de-escalation in Libya’s Tripoli

The United Nations has called for urgent de-escalation in Libya’s capital of Tripoli as rival gunmen exchanged fire in the city’s southern districts prompting authorities to impose an emergency lockdown warning. This after the killing of Abdel Ghani al-Kikli, widely known as “Gheniwa”, who is the head of the powerful Stability Support Authority militia.

US & China agree reduction in the tariffs

Following trade talks in Geneva, both the US and China have confirmed a reduction in the tariffs they imposed on each other following US President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs earlier this year. The deal involves both nations cancelling some tariffs altogether and suspending others for 90 days, by 14 May.

59 white South Africans arrive in the US as refugees

A group of 59 white South Africans has arrived in the US, where they are to be granted refugee status. President Donald Trump has said the refugee applications for the country's Afrikaner minority had been expedited as they were victims of "racial discrimination" - which the South African government denies.

The UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency, confirmed that it wasn't involved in the vetting, as is usually the case.

Carlo Ancelotti announced as Brazil’s head coach

In sports news, legendary football coach, Italian Carlo Ancelotti has been announced as the next coach of 5-time FIFA World Cup winners - Brazil. This marks Brazil’s first time appointing a permanent foreign head coach.

IPL to resume from May 17

To the IPL now and the BCCI yesterday announced the resumption of the IPL season following extensive consultations with government, security agencies, and with all the key stakeholders. The IPL will now be played across six venues from May 17 with the final slated for June 3 as per the revised schedule.
