Bhopal and its surrounding regions are immersed in the festive spirit of Rang Panchami, a vibrant celebration traditionally held five days after Holi. Devotees are flocking to the iconic Curfew Wali Mata Temple to offer prayers and participate in the colourful festivities.

What is Rang Panchami?

Rang Panchami is a vibrant Hindu festival celebrated five days after Holi, primarily in Madhya Pradesh and parts of North India, including Bhopal. The festival, observed on the fifth day of the Krishna Paksha (waning phase) in the Hindu month of Phalguna or Chaitra, is marked by the joyous throwing of coloured powders and water, symbolising renewal, victory over negativity, and the cleansing of the five elements (earth, water, fire, air, and sky).

Rang Panchami overshadows Holi

In Madhya Pradesh, Rang Panchami often overshadows Holi in scale and enthusiasm, with grand public celebrations, processions, and cultural events. The festival carries deep historical and spiritual significance, rooted in traditions dating back to the Holkar dynasty, which elevated its status into a major community event.

Celebrations at ‘Curfew Wali Mata’ Temple

In Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, Rang Panchami is celebrated with fervour, and the Curfew Wali Mata Temple serves as a significant focal point for devotees and visitors during this time. Located in the bustling Peer Gate area of Old Bhopal, this temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga and is famously known as "Curfew Wali Mata" due to its origin during a period of unrest.

‘Curfew Wali Mata’: The history

The temple’s history traces back to 1982, when an idol of Goddess Durga was installed during a month-long curfew following riots in the city. This event gave the temple its unique name and a special place in the hearts of locals, who see it as a symbol of resilience and divine protection.

Devotees give way to ambulance in Indore
