The Met Department has sounded a red alert for Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, and Kozhikode districts in Kerala. These districts are likely to receive "extremely heavy rainfall" within the next 24 hours. According to officials, a large volume of rain is expected to fall in a short period, which may lead to flash floods and landslides. Waterlogging is also anticipated in urban and low-lying areas.
Rains Batter Bengaluru
Rains continue to batter Bengaluru, disrupting normal life. Heavy downpours over the past 36 hours have thrown the city out of gear, with waterlogging and traffic jams reported in several areas on Tuesday. The Met Department has issued an orange alert for Bengaluru and a red alert for some parts of Karnataka on Tuesday as well.

BJP Leader’s Comments: SIT Formed
Latest on the objectionable comments by BJP leader Vijay Shah against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi: Following an order from the Supreme Court, Madhya Pradesh police has formed an SIT to investigate the matter. The three-member SIT will file its first status report in the Apex Court on 28 May. The Supreme Court ordered the SIT probe after rejecting the BJP leader’s apology.
Legal practice for judicial service
The Supreme Court has made three years of legal practice mandatory for entry into judicial services. Passing the verdict, the bench of Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice Augustine George Masih highlighted the complications arising from the appointment of fresh law graduates. CJI Gavai also noted that experience gained through courtroom practice is crucial to ensuring both competence and efficiency in the judicial process.
India On COVID-19 Alert
India remains on alert as several parts of Asia, including Singapore and Hong Kong, record a spike in fresh COVID cases. News agency PTI reported, quoting official sources, that the coronavirus situation in the country is under control. As of May 19, the number of active COVID-19 cases in India stands at 257, a very low figure considering the country's large population, officials said.

Eminent astrophysicist Dr Jayant Vishnu Narlikar died in Pune on Tuesday. He was 86. The astrophysicist attained international fame for the Hoyle–Narlikar theory of gravity. He was a towering figure in Indian science and widely known for his pioneering contributions to cosmology.
