Have you noticed how many celebrity brides are opting for the traditional saree for their big day? Recently, pictures of Samantha Ruth Prabhu from her ceremony with Raj went viral. She can be seen in a gorgeous red saree, bringing back the focus on saree as bridal wear.
Samantha’s choice was striking not just because it was red, but because it quietly celebrated heritage. But, she is not the only bride who chose to wear a saree on her big day. Here are some more celebs who opted for a saree on their big day.
Samantha Ruth Prabhu's wedding saree
Samantha Ruth Prabhu wore a red saree that featured delicate powder-zari buttis and a nishi-woven border executed in intricate cutwork. The finishing touches featured exquisite beige-gold zardozi work, incorporating traditional elements such as saadi taar (metallic thread), cutdana (beads), kasab (silk-wrapped thread), and tiny mirrors.
Though minimalist in its overall aesthetic, Samantha's bridal saree is an expression of quiet beauty and timeless artistry.
Sobhita Dhulipala's wedding saree
Joining her in championing the timeless drape is Sobhita Dhulipala, who has always been vocal about her love for handloom heirlooms. For her wedding, Sobhita chose an antique gold Kanjeevaram silk saree woven with real gold zari. The motifs were exquisite and intricate, making her attire stand out.
Adding a personal touch, Sobhita handpicked the fabric from local shops, reflecting her deep connection to her roots and commitment to authenticity.
Keerthy Suresh's heirloom wedding saree
Keerthy Suresh added another layer of emotional depth to her wedding day by re-purposing her mom's saree. Instead of turning to a new couture piece, the actress selected her mother’s 30-year-old saree. Designer Anita Dongre reworked the vintage drape, preserving its soul while updating its structure and finish for Keerthy’s big day.
Nayanthara's bridal saree
For her big day, 'Jawan' actress Nayanthara wore a custom vermilion red saree from designer duo Monica and Karishma's brand, Jade by MK. The saree featured intricate tone-on-tone embroidery and carvings. She wore a fully covered, round-neck blouse with Goddess Lakshmi motifs on the full sleeves, which also served as bajubandh to complete her look.
Alia Bhatt
For her wedding with Ranbir Kapoor, Alia picked a hand-dyed ivory and gold Sabyasachi saree—an elegant, understated choice that quietly broke away from the usual ornate lehengas Bollywood brides wear. Interestingly, she expressed her commitment to sustainability by re-wearing it to receive her National Award.
Sonakshi Sinha
For her wedding to her longtime boyfriend Zaheer, Sonakshi Sinha wore her mom's vintage ivory Chikankari saree. But that wasn't the only saree she wore. For her reception party, Sonakshi changed into a red Banarasi silk saree from Raw Mango.
Apart from these celebrities, several stars who had multiple ceremonies and functions, opted for a saree for at least one of their big days. Katrina Kaif wore a pink floral Sabyasachi number for her one of her wedding ceremonies. Deepika Padukone wore a silk Kanjeevaram sari for one of her functions, too.
Clearly, the saree is a timeless favourite for weddings even today. Tell us, which look did you enjoy the most?
