Just hours after Donald Trump claimed India would not buy Russian oil, New Delhi made veiled remarks about its policy. India neither confirmed nor denied that it was shifting its policy towards Russia.

"It has been our consistent priority to safeguard the interests of the Indian consumer in a volatile energy scenario," Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said in a statement. "Our import policies are guided entirely by this objective."

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has previously defended buying oil from Russia, a historic partner of India, despite Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

Trump in August raised tariffs on Indian exports to the United States to 50%, with Donald Trump's aides accusing India of fueling Russia's war in Ukraine.

Israel on edge with Hamas

The Palestinian armed group Hamas has said it has handed back all the deceased Israeli hostages that it can. The slow return of the dead hostages has once again angered Israel. Israel's defence minister has even threatened to resume the fighting.

Since Monday, under a ceasefire agreement brokered by US President Donald Trump, the Palestinian Islamist group has handed back 20 surviving hostages to Israel in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners freed from Israeli jails.

It has also returned the remains of nine of 28 known deceased hostages -- along with another body, which Israel said was not that of a former hostage.

HMIL's next CEO to be Indian

The Hyundai Motor India Ltd board has approved the elevation of its Chief Operating Officer Tarun Garg as Managing Director and CEO from January 1, 2026, as part of its succession planning, according to a regulatory filing by the company. Garg will be the first Indian to occupy the position at the Indian arm of the South Korean auto major.

Garg, currently serving as Wholetime Director and Chief Operating Officer, will take over the new role from January 1, 2026, subject to shareholders' approval and in the intervening period will be MD & CEO Designate.

Garg had joined HMIL from rival Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, where he began as a management trainee and rose through the ranks, holding various roles and ultimately becoming Executive Director of Marketing, Logistics, Parts and Accessories.

Indian team wheels down in Australia

Senior stars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were among the first batch of Indian cricketers who flew off on Wednesday for a three-match ODI series against Australia.

The ODI series has generated significant buzz due to the chatter surrounding the future of Rohit and Kohli, both of whom are now retired from Tests and T20Is.

Preparations are already underway for the ODI games, which begin on October 19, the eve of Diwali.
