US President Donald Trump has announced a "complete and total" ceasefire between Israel and Iran in a post to Truth Social. Trump added that the ceasefire will start first with Iran and after 12 hours Israel would follow suit.
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has seemingly suggested the ceasefire has begun after posting on X that if Israel stops its "illegal aggression" now, Iran has "no intention to continue our response afterwards". Israel is yet to officially confirm the ceasefire.
Trump’s proclaimed ceasefire comes after Iran announced it had launched a missile attack on a US base in Qatar, at the Al Udeid Air Base. Iran said it was retaliation for US participation in Israel’s bombing campaign against them the day before.
Trump said there were no US or Qatari casualties, called the Iranian response "very weak" and thanked Iran for "early notice" of it. Qatar said all the missiles aimed at the US-run Al Udeid base were intercepted and labelled the attack a "flagrant violation".
Shifting focus, a divided US Supreme Court has cleared the way for President Trump's administration to resume deportations of migrants to countries other than their homeland.
In a 6-3 majority ruling, the conservative justices reversed a lower court order requiring the government to give migrants a "meaningful opportunity" to tell officials what risks they might face.
The court's three liberal justices dissented from the majority ruling that was unsigned and offered no reasoning, as is common when it decides emergency requests.
Moving on, Canada has signed a wide-ranging defence pact with the EU, as Donald Trump and global instability prompt traditional US allies to deepen their alliances.
Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, on Monday was joined by European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, and Head of the European Council, António Costa, in Brussels.
The pact includes a security and defence partnership, more support for Ukraine, as well as joint work on issues from the climate crisis to artificial intelligence.
This even as Trump is expected at a high-stakes NATO summit set to begin today at the Hague. Top of the agenda is likely to be the increasing spending target that Trump has been pushing member states to do for a while.
