Trump hits Canada with 35% tariff on imports

US President Donald Trump has slapped Canada with a 35% tariff on imports effective Aug 1. Trump announced the new levies in a letter posted to Truth Social and addressed to Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Trump’s letter to Canada comes after he sent more than 20 letters to countries this week informing them what rates their goods will be tariffed at, come August 1. Canada is by far the largest trading partner with the United States to receive such a letter.

Rubio-Lavrov hold rare face-to-face talks

Moving on, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov have held rare face-to-face talks on the sidelines of an ASEAN meeting in Malaysia.

The pair discussed the war in Ukraine, as well as developments in Iran and Syria with both sides confirming that “substantive and frank exchange of views” took place. Speaking to reporters, Rubio declared the “need to see a roadmap moving forward” about how the Russia-Ukraine conflict can conclude.

UK-France announce pilot migrant scheme

Shifting focus to Europe, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced they will begin returning migrants arriving in small boats to France within weeks under a new pilot scheme.

Speaking alongside French President Emmanuel Macron at the end of a three-day state visit, under the "one in, one out" deal, in exchange the UK would accept an equivalent number of asylum seekers, subject to security checks.

Israeli bombing kills 82 in Central Gaza, includes 10 children outside a medical point

To the latest from Gaza - 82 people have been killed amid intensifying Israeli attacks with at least 15 people, including 10 children being killed as they queued outside a medical point in central Gaza.

The uptick in Israeli bombing came as negotiators said a Gaza ceasefire deal was in sight, but not yet achieved. Reports state the strike on Thursday morning hit families waiting for nutritional supplements and medical treatment in front of a medical point in Deir al-Balah.

Project Hope, which runs the facility, said operations at the clinic had been suspended until further notice.
