US court blocks Trump's tariffs, cites overreach

A US federal court has ruled that President Trump overstepped his authority by imposing global tariffs.

The Manhattan-based court said the US Constitution gives Congress exclusive powers to regulate commerce with other nations and this is not superseded by the president's remit to safeguard the economy.

The Trump administration has lodged an appeal.

Trump warns Netanyahu off Iran strike

Moving on, Trump has told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to hold off on any strike against Iran to give his administration more time to push for a new nuclear deal with Tehran.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said that he relayed to Netanyahu a strike “would be inappropriate to do right now because we’re very close to a solution”.

This after the Israeli leader has been threatening a bombardment of Iranian nuclear facilities following which Iran said it would respond with severity if any such attack were launched.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announces new visa norms

Staying with the US, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that the US will impose visa bans on foreign nationals it deems to be censoring Americans.

Rubio added that “free speech is essential to the American way of life - a birthright over which foreign governments have no authority”.

In a separate statement titled “New Visa Policies Put America First, Not China”, Rubio has said that the US will “aggressively revoke” the visas of Chinese students studying in the country.

The statement further added that the US will also “revise visa criteria to enhance scrutiny of all future visa applications from the People’s Republic of China and Hong Kong”.

Starving Palestinians storm UN food warehouse; 4 dead

To the latest from Gaza - four people have died as thousands of Palestinians burst into a United Nations warehouse in Gaza.

Health officials said that two people were fatally crushed and two others died of gunshot wounds after the crowd forced its way into a World Food Programme warehouse.

A WFP statement said that “hordes of hungry people broke into WFP’s al-Ghafari warehouse in search of food supplies that were pre-positioned for distribution” and warned of “alarming and deteriorating conditions on the ground”.
