When a Chhattisgarh villager got calls from Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers

Imagine suddenly getting a call from Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. You skipped a beat, right? But this isn’t some hypothetical scenario; it actually happened to a young man from Chhattisgarh.

One day, Manish Bisi bought a SIM card from a local mobile shop, completely unaware that his life was about to feel like a movie scene. As soon as he installed WhatsApp, he noticed Rajat Patidar’s profile picture.

At first, he thought it was some sort of glitch. But then, the calls started coming in, and the callers identified themselves as Kohli, de Villiers, and Yash Dayal. Manish still assumed his friends were playing a prank on him, so he went along with it.

A few days later, he received a direct call from Rajat Patidar himself, asking, “Brother, please return my SIM card.” Manish still couldn’t believe any of it was real, and eventually, Rajat had to involve the local police. When they showed up at Manish’s house, he finally realised this was no joke; he had actually been getting calls from Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers.

The truth was finally uncovered. After Patidar gave up his old number, telecom policy dictated that after 90 days of inactivity, the number would be reassigned to a new customer. "There was no legal issue or fault on anyone's part. This was simply a result of standard telecom procedures," said Gariaband Deputy Superintendent of Police Neha Sinha.

"Manish was actually getting calls from cricketers who were in contact with Rajat Patidar. Patidar informed the Madhya Pradesh Cyber Cell that his number had been allotted to someone else and requested to have it back," she added.

Khemraj, who is Manish's friend and an ardent Kohli fan, was also with Manish when they received those calls. He excitedly said, "I never imagined I would speak to Virat Kohli one day, and that too from our village. When AB de Villiers called, he spoke in English. We couldn't understand a word, but we were so thrilled."

"When Manish used to get calls, he would hand over the phone to me. The callers who identified themselves as Virat Kohli and Yash Dayal asked us why we were using Patidar's number. We explained to them we had bought a new SIM and this is our number," Khemraj added.

For a brief, dreamlike moment, a young man from Chhattisgarh lived an experience that millions wouldn’t even dare to dream of.
