Ever since Rohit Sharma was removed from the ODI captaincy, the talk of the town is - will he play the 2027 ODI World Cup? But for now, he is taking it step by step. And the first assignment on that road is the tour of Australia.
Rohit Sharma on the Australia series
In a recent event, Rohit talked about the Aussies as an opposition and said that he loves the challenge Down Under. "I love playing against them. I love going to Australia. It's a very challenging country to play cricket in. The people there love the game as well. But certainly, Australia will throw a different challenge, which they have every time they have played against us," stated Rohit.
Yes, the challenge ahead will be a massive one. No matter how well Rohit Sharma plays, the sword will always hang over his head. Even a couple of failures could easily be used as an excuse to drop him.But we all know why Rohit is called the Hitman. He’s always ready to face any challenge head-on, and this situation is no different. "Having been there several times now, I understand what to expect. But hopefully, we can go there and do what the Indian team is supposed to do. Try and win games, try and get the results in our favour and try and do well there," added the Hitman.
Whether it was playing selfless cricket in the 2023 ODI World Cup or batting with a fearless approach in the 2024 T20 World Cup knockout games, he has always put the team first. And for those who were talking about his so-called “weight issues”, just take a look at his latest videos and pictures. Rohit is putting his heart and soul into preparing for the next World Cup.
Will Rohit play the 2027 ODI World Cup?
By the time the next ODI World Cup approaches, Rohit will be 41. That's not ideal, but that won't matter if he's scoring runs. And right now, his bat is making all the noise. Since 2023, Rohit has smashed 1714 runs in 37 knocks in ODIs at a strike rate of over 117. His average of 48.97 is extremely impressive during this period.
So, as far as runs are concerned, he does make a great case for himself. But the harsh truth is, he can’t afford even a couple of low scores from here on.
Team India is left with 24 ODIs before the 2027 World Cup. The matches will be divided into nine series of 3 ODIs each against 7 opponents. The roadmap is set, and the Hitman will have to cash in every opportunity to continue making his presence felt.
