Bhopal witnessed a rare moment of political harmony on Thursday, as leaders from both the ruling and opposition parties joined hands in a vibrant celebration of Faag Mahotsav at the Vidhan Sabha Mansarovar Auditorium.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, state assembly Leader of Opposition (LoP) and Congress leader Umang Singhar, and state minister Kailash Vijayvargiya came together, setting aside political differences to revel in the joyous festival. While Yadav and Singhar danced energetically, Vijayvargiya entertained the crowd with soulful singing, creating a spectacle that captured the essence of unity and cultural pride.

What Is Faag Mahotsav

Faag Mahotsav, also known as Fagotsav, is a significant cultural festival in northern India, particularly tied to the Hindu festival of Holi. Celebrated during the month of Phalgun (February-March), it marks the arrival of spring and the playful love between Lord Krishna and Radha.

Celebrating Folk Songs

The term "Faag" refers to folk songs sung during this period, often narrating Krishna’s antics with the gopis, while "Mahotsav" means a grand festival. Spanning several days—sometimes up to 40, starting from Basant Panchami—it features music, dance, and rituals, including the Ras Leela, colourful Holi celebrations like Phoolwali Holi, and temple festivities in places like Vrindavan and Barsana. In Madhya Pradesh, it’s a three-day post-Holi event organized by the state’s Department of Culture, featuring poetry recitals, light music, and folk dances.

Yadav, CM since 2023, Singhar, a prominent adivasi leader, and Vijayvargiya, a seasoned BJP figure, highlighted how cultural traditions can bridge political divides. The celebration, captured in viral images and videos, resonated with Madhya Pradesh’s rich cultural heritage.
