Have you visited West Bengal’s Darjeeling? This quaint hill station has been the backdrop of many film shoots, including Vidya Balan’s ‘Parineeta’. While Darjeeling has many must-visit restaurants, Glenary’s, located in the main market, stands out for many reasons more than one.

Glenary’s is an experience — a slice of the town’s colonial past, served with freshly brewed coffee, warm pastries, and timeless charm. Here is all you need to know about the iconic eatery in West Bengal.

The rich history of Glenary’s

What most visitors don’t know is that Glenary’s didn’t always go by this name. In fact, its story began with an Italian man named Vado, who first opened the establishment and named it after himself. Back then, it was simply called Vado.

As its popularity grew, the name evolved to Vado & Pliva Confectionery, marking the beginning of its long-standing legacy. But in 1959, a new chapter began when A.T. Edwards, purchased the establishment. He renamed it Glenary’s, giving it the name we know today.

Who takes care of Glenary’s now?

Over the decades, Glenary’s has remained in the care of the Edwards family. Today, Ajoy Edwards, the third generation custodian, runs Glenary’s with the same quiet pride.

What is so special about Glenary’s?

Be it the Victorian décor, arched French windows, or the signature red telephone booth, Glenary’s brings in the old world charm.

This is a great place for all the food lovers. From sausages and meatloaf to ham, bacon, and fresh-baked croissants, the café’s menu is a nod to classic British culinary traditions.

A meal for two will cost you anything between ₹1,000–₹1,500.

They also have great hot chocolates, best for winter outings!

Beyond a food joint

In 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic brought the world to its knees, Glenary’s made headlines for a very different reason. Owner Ajoy Edwards transformed the café’s top floor into a free isolation ward for locals, recognising Darjeeling’s limited healthcare resources.
