In today’s diet culture, carbohydrates often find themselves unfairly vilified. While low-carb trends like keto have gained popularity, it's important to understand that carbs are not the enemy. In fact, they play a vital role in maintaining overall health, especially for brain function and energy production.

Why your brain loves carbs

The brain runs primarily on glucose; a simple sugar derived from carbohydrates. When carb intake drops too low, the body is forced to find alternative energy sources usually from fat and protein. While this can keep you going short-term, it’s not the most efficient or sustainable method. Over time, this can slow your metabolism and put extra strain on your system.

The role of complex carbs

Not all carbs are created equal. While refined sugars and highly processed foods can cause blood sugar spikes and crashes, complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, oats, and legumes provide sustained energy. These foods are also rich in fiber and essential nutrients like vitamin B, which support nervous system function and digestion. Judging food solely by its calorie count ignores the vital nutrients that complex carbs bring to the table.

Protein-sparing power of carbs

When you don’t eat enough carbs, your body begins to use protein as an energy source. This isn’t ideal—protein's primary job is to help repair and build muscle tissue. By consuming an adequate amount of carbohydrates, you allow protein to perform its core function effectively. This is particularly important for athletes and anyone engaged in regular physical activity.

Hormones, mood, and recovery

Carbohydrates also have a surprising effect on mood and hormonal balance. They help regulate serotonin, a neurotransmitter that contributes to feelings of well-being and happiness. Moreover, after intense exercise, carbs play a key role in replenishing glycogen stores in muscles, aiding quicker recovery and reducing fatigue.

Finding balance, not fear

While some people might need to monitor their carbohydrate intake for medical reasons, most individuals benefit from including healthy carbs in their diet. Instead of cutting carbs entirely, aim to choose whole, unprocessed sources like brown rice, lentils, fruits, and vegetables.

A balanced plate that includes some dal and chawal (lentils and rice) offers comfort, nutrition, and energy. Carbohydrates are more than just calories—they’re essential for cognitive function, hormonal health, and physical performance.

Eliminating carbs without medical advice could do more harm than good. When chosen wisely, carbs support everything from your brain to your muscles. So, the next time you’re tempted to skip them, remember: your body—and especially your brain—needs the fuel.
