The character Wednesday Addams originates from ‘The Addams Family’ cartoons by Charles Addams which had first appeared in The New Yorker in a 1944 panel. The name ‘Wednesday’ also was taken from the nursery rhyme, ‘Wednesday’s child is full of woe’, as suggested by Joan Blake to Charles Addams.
Tim Burton, along with showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, reimagined this classic character as a goth revival and mystery series for the modern generation and the contemporary streaming audience. The show blends horror, fantasy, and heartfelt themes, drawing influences from cult favourites like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Daria the Times.
In the past there have been many adaptations of ‘The Addams Family’ including the 1991 horror comedy film ‘The Addams Family’ as well as the animated version on Cartoon Network which is still a classic favourite of every millennial.
While Wednesday is a Netflix original series and has no connection with Cartoon Network, the Addams Family did have animated adaptations in TV history, but traditionally on networks like ABC, Fox, and later Cartoon Network in reruns. The origin of Wednesday remains firmly rooted in Charles Addams’ cartoons, not animated TV. There's no official Cartoon Network origin of Wednesday; she’s adapted from the broader Addams Family legacy.
Part 2 of 'Wednesday' Season 2 is releasing on Netflix on September 3, 2025. It will continue with the dark mysteries, enriched by family dynamics now brought into Nevermore itself. The show will explore some fresh character traits of the characters. From Gomez’s fiery passion to Thing’s mischievous characteristics with a dash of sass, fans can’t wait to watch the concluding part of the second season.
