US President Donald Trump has said that he is very close to making a (trade) deal. However responding to a question regarding the timeline of such deals, Trump added that he could make deals “in a day,” but he “wants to make them proper.” The statement comes a time when Trump has paused his reciprocal tariffs for 90 days for all countries, except China.

Can Make A Deal In A Day: Trump

Responding to the question regarding how close the Trump administrations was to the first country coming to actually make a deal with the US on the tariffs, Trump said, “So, I think it's very close, but you know we have to have a deal that we like. We don't want a deal that's going to be a bad deal, or I could make every deal in one day if I wanted to. I could do this all, in one day.”

Reiterating his take on making ‘proper’ trade deals, Trump added, “But we want to make deals that are proper for the United States, not just we can make deals easily, we want to make them proper.”

Trump’s Tariff Pause

These comments come a day after the US President announced a 90-day pause on his “reciprocal” tariffs, reducing tariff rates for most US trade partners to 10%. However, he increased tariff on China to 125%, accusing it of showing a “lack of respect to the world’s markets.” President Trump’s tariff reversal came within hours of these reciprocal tariffs kicking in. It also followed China’s decision to raise its retaliatory tariff on American exports to 84%.

Relief For Over 75 Countries

Announcing the tariff pause for other countries, the US President had written on his social media platform Truth Social, “Based on the fact that more than 75 Countries have called Representatives of the United States, including the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and the USTR, to negotiate a solution to the subjects being discussed relative to Trade, Trade Barriers, Tariffs, Currency Manipulation, and Non Monetary Tariffs, and that these Countries have not, at my strong suggestion, retaliated in any way, shape, or form against the United States, I have authorized a 90 day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%, also effective immediately. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
