Skincare routines have evolved into multi-step rituals with serums, acids, masks, and more. But now, TikTok is flipping the script with a surprising new trend: Caveman Skincare. And yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like—no products, no face wash, and no skincare whatsoever. However, this trend is not necessarily new. A version of this keeps popping up every couple of years. Why? Read on to find out.
Popularised by creators like Tia Zakher, caveman skincare is a radically minimalist approach to skin health. It involves skipping all skincare products and sometimes even not washing your face for weeks. The philosophy is inspired by how our ancestors lived without modern cleansers or beauty routines and is based on the belief that the skin can heal and regulate itself naturally.
Paleo skin, a trend that was popular a decade or so ago, is pretty much based on the same principles. So how come this ‘do nothing’ approach keeps resurfacing?
While every consumer loves having a variety of options to choose from, the sheer volume of new skincare releases today is no joke. The pressure to buy things because of social media trends hyping up a product is another problem. Add to that the confusing marketing and contradictory information about ingredient and product benefits, and it’s enough to overwhelm anyone. So, it’s no surprise that people are starting to ask the question: Do we really need so many products?
At the end of the day, this trend taps into a desire for simplicity. In a digital world fuelled by overconsumption, going back to basics, or going completely bare, feels like a refreshing break.
While the 2016 era of YouTube and Instagram was all about a full face of makeup, beauty creators are focusing more on skincare now. Multi-step routines, intense overnight skin rituals, and a long list of products to apply are what social media users keep getting exposed to.
For many, caveman skincare is a reaction to skincare burnout. The beauty world is full of overwhelming advice, actives, layering techniques and new ingredients every month. But this doesn’t work for everyone. In fact, the TikToker who spearheaded this all, Tia Zakher, cited too many products ruining her skin barrier, as one of the reasons for opting for the caveman approach. No wonder people want to give their skin a break!
While the idea of letting your skin ‘breathe’ sounds peaceful, the real question is: Is it practical in polluted urban environments, or hot and humid, dust-ridden regions? Cities are filled with pollution, dust, and sweat, making cleansing a necessity for many. There’s also the fact that many regions in the world get harsh sunlight, making SPF a necessity. So, given that our skin is an external organ, keeping it healthy does actually require products.
For people with acne-prone or sensitive skin, especially, skipping cleansing might lead to clogged pores, inflammation, or worse. Dermatologists often warn that while some people may benefit from simplifying their routines, doing nothing at all isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution.
Plus, skin-healing products without harsh actives exist, and are a great option for damaged or sensitive skin. So, if one doesn’t want to “do too much,” there are several options to keep the skin protected.
Caveman skincare has sparked an important conversation: Do we actually need everything in our current routines? While going product-free may not be for everyone, it’s a reminder to listen to your skin, not just trends.
In the end, skincare isn’t about extremes, whether it's 12-step routines or zero products. It’s about finding a balance that works for your lifestyle, your environment, and your unique skin needs.
