The United Nations Security Council is holding closed-door consultations on Monday, May 5 over the rising tensions between India and Pakistan. Pakistan, a non-permanent member of the UNSC, had requested the emergency meeting.
The Security Council has five permanent members — the Unites States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China. It also has ten rotating members and Pakistan is one of them.
Pakistan’s request for meet
Pakistan's request for the discussion follows India's vow to retaliate for the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir. 26 innocent Indians were killed in the deadly terror attack. Relation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours have only worsened since.
Defence Minister’s assurance
Meanwhile, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has assured people that the Modi government will respond to the Pahalgam terror attack the way they desire. Addressing the Sanskriti Jagran Mahotsav in Delhi on May 4, Rajnath Singh says, "You all know Prime Minister Narendra Modi's work ethic and perseverance. You are aware of his efficiency and determination. You are aware of the way he has learnt to take risks in his life.”
The Defence Minister added, “I want to assure you that under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi jaisa aap chahte hain waisa hokar rahega (as you wish, so shall be the outcome)."
PM meets IAF, Navy Chiefs
Over the weekend, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bunch of crucial meeting. On Sunday, the Prime Minister met the Indian Air Force Chief Air Marshal Amar Preet Singh. The meeting with the IAF Chief came a day after PM Modi’s meeting with Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi on Saturday. Prime Minister Modi also met the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah on Saturday, May 3.
PM vows to act against terrorists
Over the weekend, PM Modi also reiterated his vow to act against the perpetrators of Pahalgam terror attack. He said, “We are committed to take firm and decisive action against terrorists and those who support them.”
