In a move that has surprised IPL fans across the board, Punjab Kings (PBKS) have released Australian wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis ahead of the IPL 2026 mega auction. The decision comes despite Inglis playing a key role for the franchise last season and even delivering one of the most memorable performances of IPL 2025.

From Smashing Bumrah to Released: Inglis’ Surprising Exit

Fans still remember Qualifier 2 from IPL 2025, when Josh Inglis smashed Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah for 20 runs in a single over. It was a match-defining moment that underlined Inglis’ fearless intent and power-hitting prowess.

Given that, few expected PBKS to release him just one season later. Especially since Inglis had strong numbers: 278 runs in 11 games, averaging 31 with a strike rate of 163, all for a modest price tag of ₹2.6 crore. His consistency and adaptability made him one of Punjab’s most impactful overseas players in IPL 2025.

So naturally, when the list of released players was announced, fans were left scratching their heads.

Ricky Ponting Explains the Decision

Head coach Ricky Ponting later addressed the confusion during an interview with the official broadcaster. Ponting revealed that the decision wasn’t performance-based, but rather a logistical call. According to him, Inglis was unlikely to be available for the majority of IPL 2026 due to international commitments with Australia.

What This Means for PBKS

While the move is understandable, it leaves Punjab Kings with a major void behind the stumps. With Inglis gone, it’s expected that Prabhsimran Singh will resume full-time wicketkeeping duties for the franchise.

PBKS have already made several bold decisions this season, including releasing Glenn Maxwell, as they look to rebuild under Ponting’s new strategy.

A Missed Asset, or a Smart Move?

Only time will tell if PBKS made the right call. Inglis’ clean ball-striking was tailor-made for Punjab’s middle order. But with the Australian unavailable for the full season, and new overseas options on the radar, the franchise has chosen practicality over sentiment.

Either way, Josh Inglis’ release remains one of the most talked-about moves post the IPL 2026 retention announcement.
