For decades, raiding your mom’s or grandma’s jewellery trunk was a time-honoured tradition before a wedding or festive celebration. Be it mummy’s sarees or her jewellery, things owned by mom always find a place during special occasions.

But Gen Z? They’re rewriting the rulebook and they’re doing it with an unapologetic, fashion-forward twist. They no longer wait for special occasions to wear statement jewellery. Wondering what we are talking about? Let us explain.

Gen Z and their love for heirloom jewels

Gone are the days when opulent heirloom jewellery only saw the light of day during Diwali or a cousin’s shaadi. Today, you might spot a 22-year-old pairing a diamond choker with a silk slip dress for a night out, or styling a gold kamarbandh over a crisp power suit. For this generation, everyday is special and every outfit deserves a great piece of statement jewellery.

Take Khushi Kapoor, for instance. During the premiere of ‘The Archies’, she wore her late mother Sridevi’s stunning diamond choker but instead of pairing it with a saree, she styled it with an elegant gown. Even the gown belonged to her late mom. Talk about nostalgia meeting fashion!

Even ‘Never Have I Ever’ star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan brought the drama by wearing a traditional maangtika with an edgy black leather jacket. And then there’s Lara Rajagopalan from the global girl group KATSEYE, who stunned in a mini dress topped off with a maangtika, making unconventional look sexy.

This isn’t just about shock value; it’s a statement against the sameness of fast fashion and overused styling formulas. Gen Z thrives on individuality, and their approach to jewellery is no different. By pairing an heirloom with an unexpected outfit, they’re not just making a style choice; they’re creating a conversation.

‘One Hero’ piece is supremely important

Another hallmark of this trend? The “one hero piece” philosophy. Unlike traditional styling that often layers multiple jewellery pieces, Gen Z prefers to spotlight one standout accessory. This not only keeps the look wearable for everyday outings but also ensures the chosen piece commands full attention.

Fashion experts say this styling shift is also practical. Why lock away beautifully crafted heritage pieces when they can be part of your daily wardrobe? From gala nights to grocery runs, the new rules are simple: If you love it, wear it.
